They say that you should regularly check the services you use and comparison websites can play a part in this.

Just looking at the phone and broadband deals at the moment has any one had a good/bad experience with Plusnet ?- not a household name, but sometimes these can be better. Other suggestions welcome.

It would also be nice to be able to get near a download speed of 6Mb and I would happily pay the extra to get to 20Mb but it would seem that being in the wrong end of a village, 4 miles from a major UK city we are penalised for not being in a low cost area and saddled with a super slow snail pace service.

Hi Phillip,

I've been with Plusnet for 2 years now and they are brilliant. Not the cheapest, but rock-solid service, never any down-time and a good monthly quota. Also, they offer a free VOIP connection as part of the broadband connection. We use it as a second phone, having bought a VOIP phone off eBay!

With regard to your desire for 6-20MB - ha ha ha!

This is a village, with old copper cables, a long way from the exchange. You can't have everything! "Penalised" is a rather strong word, don't you think? I get 1.5Mb, which I wouldn't call "snail pace". It works perfectly well for me, including the VOIP phone I mentioned.

If you want faster, wait for Midas to build some lovely new homes, and buy one of those! They're bound to get a nice new exchange to go with it!

Cheers,
Adam

The ADSL speed you get will depend on which Telephone Exchange you are connected to. In general terms the older parts of the village will be connected to Kennford Telephone Exchange so speeds from that distance will be slower. The newer parts of the village are likely to be served from our own village exchange which can be found above the football pitch. I can get near 7meg on a good day so you can guess which exchange I'm connected to. If you want superfast speeds you'll have to wait a while (probably a good while) or move to where the Fibre services are being rolled out to.

Hi Phillip
I have been suffering lack of a decent BB connection since I moved here over 10 years ago. At first BT would not even offer BB as I am to far from the exchange and after a few years they did open up to 512kbps so I went with Freeserve (now Orange) they eventually got it up to 1meg but it has not lasted and it went down to just a dial up speed, crazy.
However I recently change to Eclipse and they sorted out the problem by getting BT to cap my line to 1 meg and now at least I have a workable speed if not brilliant, Eclipse are great they quickly sorted out a couple of problems and their support line is excellent, no disrespect but it was great to be talking to someone I could understand and not someone in India who only reads from a script.
But I fear as all the comment above I see no chance of getting a quicker connection to get that I would need to be connected to the local exchange and not Kennford.
I have written to the top man in BT smilies/smiley.gif about not being connected to the local exchange but I hold out no hope, I am waiting for a reply for the second time I know it won't do any good but it made me feel better I just put to him in this modern day and age and there is a local exchange only 800 metres from my house why can I not be connected to it instead of one over 4 kilometres away and that is in a straight line cable wise I think it is nearer 6.
I must not ramble on any longer but this problem really gets me going.
Regards
Peter
