It?s Fairtrade Fortnight, and in the same way that every day is mother?s day, every week should be Fairtrade week. As some of you may be aware I have made a small contribution of my time over the years with my brother to try and help Fairtrade, last year I went to Malawi to see subsistence farmers growing peanuts, I saw how Fairtrade helps these farmers and the fantastic effect that the principles of Fairtrade have on one of the poorest country?s in the world. As a result of our trip and all the hard work by the people at Liberation Foods, Harry Nuts are now available in many of the stores with long aisles and a till at the end that goes boop.
I have attached the fairtrade Logo, look for it. Its well known now, but you still have to look for it, we buy Fairtrade Bananas whenever we can, and will introduce other products as they become available to us. One of the great things about farms is that people like to visit them, people always enjoy a visit round a farm, you therefore never really know who may turn up. This Sunday a box scheme customer turned up with Arsene Baperma Sourabie, and he is a member of a co-operative that grows mangoes for export as dried pieces, sold here by Tropical Wholefoods. He is in the UK for Fairtrade Fortnight, on a tour organised by the Fairtrade Foundation - these tours happen every year to promote Fairtrade, but not always in this area. It was great to meet Arsene and show him round the farm, agriculture is a universal language, you can walk anywhere in the world if you are an agriculturalist and have an understanding of each others systems. The systems may be different but the principles are the same. He had a healthy interest in irrigation systems and I promised him I would send him info about simple systems, which will work in Africa.
